Inside Out—an inclusive dance lab

09/16/2018–09/18/2018

September 16–18, 2018

As part of Garage’s partnership with the New Holland Island, Australian choreographer Philip Channells and the team of Dance Integrated Australia will run a three-day inclusive dance laboratory in Saint Petersburg.

A series of dance workshops organized in collaboration with the company Dance Integrated Australia proved to be one of the most important events within last year’s training program Experiencing the Museum hosted by Garage. Adults with intellectual disabilities engaged in the workshops alongside Theater Ballet Moscow dancers. The laboratory concluded with a presentation by Philip Channells explaining the choreographer’s methods of work with mixed groups.

This year, these master classes will resume at Saint Petersburg’s New Holland Island where dance will serve as the basis for developing a new vocabulary of movement, while, completed with film and digital technologies, it will help to open new perspectives for the participants’ interaction with the world in its most diverse physical and sensory aberrations.

The lab format has also evolved, it now welcomes any participants, regardless of the nature of their disability and dancing experience, along with people with intellectual disabilities and professional dancers. Wrapping up the event, the group will release a video documenting the two-year experience of work with inclusive dance practices in Moscow and Saint Petersburg.
