Culture 360: Transforming society through the arts. A Lecture by Marcus Davey

10/16/2018
7:30–9 PM Pavilion

October 16, 7:30 PM

Marcus Davey, Chief Executive and Artistic Director of the Roundhouse in London, will give an overview of his organisation’s impact has in both a national and international context, with a focus on new cultural movements that have influenced the music industry, digital developments and broadcast, circus, theatre and poetry.

With London’s population at nearly 40% black, Asian and minority ethnic, and with only 10% of the UK’s creative industries workforce coming from a working class background, Marcus will explain how organisations are adapting to be more inclusive, through leadership, management, training and programmes.

During the last decade there have been a significant number of challenges in the UK that have driven rapid change in the arts and creative industries. Marcus will discuss developments in the music industry, public funding and the rise of new art forms and genres lead by a new generation of disaffected young people.

And finally, at a time when the UK is planning to leave the European Union, Marcus will give examples of how new national and international network movements are arising as a way to talk about and create change in our society.

The lecture is a part of the series Theories and practices of cultural leadership organized by Garage Museum of Contemporary Art in partnership with the Cultural and Education Section of the British Embassy.

Marcus Davey — Chief Executive and Artistic Director of the Roundhouse, was previously Head of Arts for Dartington Hall Trust and then Chief Executive and Artistic Director of the Norfolk and Norwich Festival.

He is currently a Governor of the National College for Creative Industries and Co-Chair of the UK Council of the Creative Industries Federation, of which he was a co-founder.

He is an honorary fellow of The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, University of London and of Dartington College of Arts. Marcus was awarded an OBE in 2011.

Garage Museum of Contemporary Art resumes the lecture series focusing on the role of cultural leadership in the contemporary world, this year developed in partnership with the Cultural and Education Section of the British Embassy. The programme features ten important British cultural leaders from various fields who will share their professional experience and detail the internal and external challenges they face in working for their respective organisations. They will also explain how a particular figure or cultural institution can change not only the status quo in their field, but also play a crucial role in the development of a city or a country.

This year’s audiences will encounter creative directors of major UK art venues, heads of leading British museums and galleries and curators of international festival programmes, all of whom will reveal the nuances of their practice and speak about their favorite projects and critical contenporary issues with which they are dealing on a daily basis.
