November 14, 7:30 PM

Louise Jeffreys, Artistic Director of the Barbican Centre in London, will talk about the ways in which the Barbican has remained relevant in the last twenty years and answer the question: how has it managed to succeed over such a long period of time?

The Barbican Centre is a performing arts centre in the Barbican Estate of the City of London and is the largest of its kind in Europe. The Barbican hosts classical and contemporary music concerts, theatre performances, film screenings and art exhibitions. It also houses a library, three restaurants, and a conservatory.

Jeffreys will discuss how the Barbican has remained a popular and modern arts centre by adapting to the changing financial, social and cultural environment over the last twenty years, and will share the new challenges that the Barbican and the wider arts sector may face in the future.

Finally, she will reflect on how her leadership style has changed over time and explore the skills that cultural leaders need to develop in order to ensure the arts continue to thrive. She will argue that the successful cultural leaders of the future will be creative and collaborative individuals who support the development of leadership skills across their organisations in order to find imaginative solutions to tough challenges.

The lecture is a part of the series “Theories and practices of cultural leadership” organised by Garage Museum of Contemporary Art together with the Cultural and Education Section of the British Embassy in Moscow.

Louise Jeffreys leads the artistic, marketing, and media relations functions at the Barbican and is responsible for the formulation, implementation and delivery of the Barbican’s artistic programme and strategic vision.

She was previously Head of Theatre and Arts Projects at the Barbican, establishing and programming BITE (Barbican International Theatre Events) which became one of London’s most innovative artistic programmes, bringing leading international performers to the UK and co-commissioning some of the most influential artists and productions of the time.

The lecture will be held in English with interpreting into Russian. Free admission. Please register.18+
