Martin Green has spent his working life staging events, festivals, and arts commissions for cities and the people who live in them. From working for the Mayor of London, producing the opening and closing ceremonies of the London Olympic and Paralympic Games, to staging a year long arts festival in the northern city of Hull in 2017. Such work has developed a profound passion and knowledge in how best the arts can connect with the lives of cities and their inhabitants. How culture can develop a unique voice for a city in the age of globalisation, and how the arts can and must be part of the wider social infrastructure of a city—including its health and social care landscape. During the talk Martin will demonstrate the images and video of the extraordinary events he has produced and the stories behind their creations.
The lecture is a part of the series “Theories and practices of cultural leadership” organised by Garage Museum of Contemporary Art together with the Cultural and Education Section of the British Embassy.

Martin Green is an inaugural member of the Circle of Cultural Fellows at King’s College London and sits on the Board of The Space, the digital commissioning and development organisation founded by the BBC and Arts Council England.
Prior to taking up his latest post as Chief Executive and Director of Hull’s Culture Company, Green masterminded some of Britain’s significant artistic events including the opening of The 02 in London, the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Opening and Closing Ceremonies, and the Opening Ceremony of the 2014 Tour de France Grand Départ in Leeds. Such success has earned him an international reputation. In 2018 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Hull and made a Commander of the British Empire in the Queen’s New Year Honours List.
