Honoring the past, shaping the future. A Lecture by David Pickard

01/18/2019
19:30–21:00 Павильон

January 18, 7:30 PM

How can opera companies remain relevant in the twenty-first century and education work enhance the artistic program of a festival? David Pickard will discuss these and other questions, based on his personal experience working in the arts for the past thirty-five years. Particular reference will be made to his recent work running two long standing UK Festivals—Glyndebourne and the BBC Proms. David will also explore the challenge of respecting the traditions of well-established arts organizations whilst ensuring that they continue to grow and develop.

The lecture is a part of the series “Theories and practices of cultural leadership” organised by Garage Museum of Contemporary Art together with the Cultural and Education Section of the British Embassy in Moscow.

After studying Music at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, David Pickard embarked on a career that would see him work at the Open Air Theatre in Regents Park and the Japan Festival before becoming Sir John Drummond’s deputy at the European Arts Festival. In 1993 he was appointed Chief Executive of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and in 2001 was made General Director of Glyndebourne Festival.

In November 2015, David took up the role of Director of the BBC Proms, the world’s greatest classical music festival. Since then, he has introduced a number of innovative initiatives such as the ‘Proms at...’ series exploring music in new spaces.

The lecture will be held in English with interpreting into Russian. Free admission. Please register. 18+
