June 14, 7:30 pm

How is it that our expectations come true without us even knowing it? To what extent can the expectation of what will happen or what, in our view, usually happens in certain situations and contexts with certain people affect the outcome? In what cases and how often do we misunderstand what lies behind our behaviour? Finally, what does this mean for us and for the people with whom we interact, and about whom we form at times involuntary opinions and preconceptions? This lecture will provide a chance to acquaint yourself with the socio-psychological approach to these questions. Based on both classical experiments and contemporary research, we will see how psychologists address these questions, and what conclusions they draw. Particular attention will be paid to the field of education, in particular how teachers’ expectations of their pupils lie behind those pupils’ achievements and learning paths.

Raisa Akifiyeva is a social psychologist, sociologist and senior lecturer at the sociology department of the St Petersburg School of Social Sciences and Humanities, part of the Higher School of Economics National Research University.

Admission is free of charge. The number of participants is limited. Please register in advance.

The Higher School of Economics has prepared a series of multidisciplinary lectures that seek to offer the general public a fresh perspective on the social phenomena and processes that we encounter every day. Leading Russian and international social scientists will use non-intuitive examples and innovative methods to show the audience just how the world in which we are living is changing before our very eyes. The speakers will present new readings on everyday phenomena, sharing recent research findings from the last 2-3 years, as well as their own personal methodologies. Each lecture offers its own introduction to the social sciences. The course is divided into three thematic blocks: Everyday Life, Culture and Big Data and New Technologies.
