Gleb Napreenko: Art as Encounter, the Image as a Struggle

05/28/2017
4:00 pm Pavilion
Lecture Hall

May 28, 4:00 pm

Art critic, theorist and historian Gleb Napreenko kicks off the lecture series, On the Edge of Art, with this lecture, which looks at the image as a space of encounter, struggle and the uneasy compromises of different forces — regardless of whether the image in question belongs to the sphere of art, religion, political propaganda or even dreams. Napreenko will survey theories on the image from Georges Didi-Huberman, Aby Warburg, Walter Benjamin, Sigmund Freud and their areas of overlap. The lecture audience will find out why it is so important that art today does not forget about the vulnerability necessary for these different forces and desires to meet within the image, and why the attempts to “normalize” contemporary art — including that being made and circulated in Russia today — is so problematic.

Admission is free of charge. The number of participants is limited. Please register in advance.
