May 1 will mark the beginning of the seventh season of summer events at New Holland Island. Like in previous years, a big programme will be offered to visitors, with major areas of music, cinema, education, and sport. During five months the park will host over three hundred events of different scale and format: from regular sports activities to big concerts and festivals.
New Holland: Cultural Urbanization has not reversed its course and continues to develop most interesting programmes in different areas in order to attract permanent visitor flows, in such a way creating a community around the project that right now will determine its future development.
Among headliners of the season are concerts of Kamasi Washington, Charlotte Gainsbourg and HONNE in the Mosaic Music series, organized together with the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art; special programme of Context. Diana Vishneva festival; Saint-Petersburg International Book Festival Revision, and a charity festival Anton’s Right Here.
In addition, during this season the island will host concerts of a dozen Russian groups, with The Retuses, Trud, SRKP, Super Collective Orchestra, and many others among them. On Wednesday, jazz evenings will take place in The Bottle House courtyard, and there will be rock and roll and boogie woogie dance events. Big concerts of new classical music will include a concert of Kymatic ensemble and a performance of Vyacheslav Gayvoronsky, composer-experimenter from Saint-Petersburg.
Education project Open Lecture Hall has expanded to ten areas this year. There will be a separate cycle of lectures by leading specialists from the State Hermitage Museum. This year the Mayak School of Creative Industries is launching educational programmes for adults for the first time, and again there will be themed intensive summer courses for children.
There will be tours around the island devoted to the history and architecture of New Holland Island; it will be possible to use audio guides in Russian and English.
Throughout the summer, New Holland Island will host film screenings in the open air Beat Film Festival and MIEFF; the cinema programme will end with Center Festival events.
Yoga lessons and modern dance lessons with Context Pro studio of Diana Vishneva are planned on the lawn; an instructor will be available twice a month at the petangue court; and gatherings of Bobby Fisher Chess Club will be held every other Sunday.
It will be possible to taste signature New Holland ice-cream in kiosks along the central alley, and in the Info Center there will be new souvenirs with the project logo. The pontoon in the inner pond will become again a city beach with restful sun-beds, changing booths and outdoor showers. 130 sculptures of Amazonian water lilies will “blossom” in the water.
